PARADISE, MI - A walk along this stretch of Lake Superior shoreline can provide more than panoramic views of the tumultuous Great Lake.

A bird observatory is nestled at the tip of Whitefish Point, noting the movements of winged travelers as they migrate each spring and fall. The point is widely considered Michigan's premier birding hotspot.

Jutting out into the huge lake, the point acts as a natural migration corridor, bringing thousands of birds through the flyway. This Globally Important Bird Area has recorded over 340 bird species, including songbirds, waterfowl and birds of prey.

Michigan Audubon runs the observatory, and staff members write weekly blogs on bird counts and other activities. One field ornithologist even hosts weekly guided tours to help visitors spot rare feathered friends.

Clay Bliznick, field ornithologist for Michigan Audubon, hosts the migratory bird walks from 9-11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 15 at Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in Paradise.

Rain or shine, visitors meet at the small white building on the southeast side of the cul-de-sac. There's no cost and no registration required to participate.

The early tour includes hiking trails, walking the shoreline and boardwalks, visiting birdfeeders, and stopping at observation decks. The walk is about 1.5 miles of moderate terrain, including sand and dirt paths.

The later tour includes boardwalks, the shoreline and bird feeders. The walk is less than one mile of easy terrain, including dirt paths.

All ages and birding levels (including non-birders) are welcome. Dressing in layers is recommended as the weather can change quickly. Organizers also recommend comfortable shoes, along with packing sun protection, bug repellant, binoculars, water, snacks and a camera.
