The council have released a statement condemning those who litter and warned more is being done to catch offenders.

The statement comes after the council allocated a greater amount of their budget towards street cleaning and tacking against fly tipping.

A spokesperson for Newport City Council said: "Newport City Council takes the scourge of fly-tipping very seriously, and we have been increasing our efforts to crack down on it.

"Like you, we are sick and tired of fly-tipping. We are fed up of people, often not from Newport, treating our wonderful city as a dumping ground. And we would rather not have to spend your money on clearing up other people's illegally dumped mess."

"We know that a significant proportion of fly-tipping is linked to commercial operations or rogue waste collectors.

"This is particularly the case in rural areas of the city, where the majority of fly-tipped waste is bulky items, construction waste, and materials linked to unlicenced waste carriers.

"Waste crime is a complex issue, sometimes linked to organised criminal activity, and it requires coordinated action across enforcement, intelligence sharing, and public education.

"The council is committed to working with residents, businesses, and partner agencies to prevent fly-tipping, support responsible waste disposal, and take action against offenders.

"We would welcome greater powers to be able to take more effective action against fly-tippers, such as an increase in the maximum amount we are allowed to fine people for these offences.

"We also ask residents to be extra vigilant and make sure that, if they are using a private waste collection service, that the person or business you use has a valid waste carriers licence, and keeping records of the waste transfer. These will help in the event their waste is found to have been illegally dumped."
